Introduction to GWP Refrigerants

I. Definition and Concept

GWP (Global Warming Potential) is an indicator that measures the extent of a refrigerant's impact on global climate warming. It compares the greenhouse effect of a refrigerant over its lifetime to the effect of an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide. In simpler terms, the higher the GWP value, the greater the potential impact of the refrigerant on global climate warming.

II. Characteristics of GWP Refrigerants

1.High greenhouse warming potential: GWP refrigerants typically have a high greenhouse warming potential, meaning they remain in the atmosphere for long periods, potentially influencing global climate for decades or even centuries. For example, the GWP of Freon is between 1300-1400, indicating its potential impact on global climate change is 1300-1400 times greater than carbon dioxide.

2.Environmental issues: In addition to GWP concerns, some GWP refrigerants may also damage the ozone layer, leading to increased ultraviolet radiation and posing hazards to human and animal health. Therefore, using GWP refrigerants requires balancing their environmental and health impacts.

III. Environmental Challenges and Alternative Solutions for GWP Refrigerants

Due to the significant potential impact of GWP refrigerants on global climate warming, international communities have begun taking action to restrict their use. For instance, countries including the European Union and the United States have imposed restrictions on the use of refrigerants with high GWP values, such as hydrofluorocarbons. To address this challenge, environmental experts recommend using environmentally friendly refrigerants as alternatives, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide. These refrigerants have lower GWP values and pose less of an impact on the environment and health.

Of course, the use of low GWP refrigeration media means that it is more friendly to the environment. However, with the current low GWP medium, there are high pressure requirements for refrigeration systems, manufacturers in the industry chain not only designed high pressure pipes, switches, compressors and other products, but also need to further reduce prices, so that the market can be widely accepted.
